Han Portrayal Bricks Museum
Han Dynasty is a very important period in Chinese history,
only because of the Han Dynasty,
could China be endowed with Han Ethnic Group, Han Language (Chinese), Han costumes, and Han (Chinese) culture.
Particularly, in the period of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty, the core traditional culture of “love, etiquette, rule of virtue” was established,
and China’s “Harmony” culture continues to this day.
Portrayal bricks were first produced 2000 years ago during the Warring States period,
and were prosperous in the Han Dynasty.
Han portrayal bricks are bricks used for construction, with mould prints on their surface, colourfully painted, or carved with images.
Their simple composition,
flying lines,
graceful charm,
and vivid touch, not only represent the highest art form of the Han Dynasty,
but also a peak in the history of Chinese arts.
====
The collections of the Chinese Han Portrayal Bricks Museum
are from the famous military collector Zhang Xinkuan.
Zhang Xinkuan is a former deputy commander of a unit of Jinan Military Region.
In the early 80s,
when he led the troops to help the local road construction,
Zhang found the Han portrayal bricks scattered in the rural area
were severely damaged, and these precious Chinese portrayal bricks were used
in the cattle sheds, in the pens of pigs, the latrine pits, and were even smashed to make pavements or fill the pits.
Since then, Zhang Xinkuan has begun his collection tour.
After 30 years of efforts,
he has now done three foremost achievements:
the greatest in number nationally,
the greatest in the scales and series of the bricks nationally;
the greatest in the geographical range of the collections.
Zhang Xinkuan also adheres to three ‘ones’ for his brick collections:
not a single one to sell,
not a single one to give away
and not a single one to exchange.
Thus he becomes a real authority in collection.
====
With the strong governmental support of the Shibei District of Qingdao Municipality,
Han Portrayal Bricks Museum has created a Shibei mode
of setting-up by the government,
management by collectors,
operation by the market,
and with the involvement of social bodies.
Now the Museum has six large exhibition halls, including
“Chinese Treasures”,
“History in Bricks”,
“Bricks Craftsmanship”,
“Inheritance from Han Dynasty”
and four large-scale basic exhibition halls,
and two features exhibition halls,
“Golden Shining Stones”,
“Graceful and Meaningful” .
The display area of the Museum is more than 8300 square meters.
“Treasure of the Museum”,
The collections of the Museum are amazingly rich,
and the portrayal bricks offer a magnificent view.
Following the opinions of experts,
we put forward three groups of treasures:
dragon and tiger groove portrayal bricks have unique shapes, with sophisticated technology and beautiful design, and are among the best of the Museum.
Fish-shaped stone chime is the only one of the country.
Luoyang intaglio portrayal bricks series, meaning “longevity, promotion, and wealth’, are rarely seen in the other part of the world.
====
More than a thousand pieces of collections are exhibited.
The images of people and animals on the Han portrayal bricks are life-like.
The patterns and lines are smooth and beautiful.
They made a comprehensive record of the Han Dynasty people’s
production and life,
science, technology and construction,
military and sports,
and culture and entertainment, and many other things.
Han Dynasty portrayal bricks are an encyclopaedia in images on the Chinese history of the Han Dynasty,
the Han Dynasty society.
They are indispensable materials for the study of the Han Dynasty and pre-Qin periods.
They have high values in arts,
archaeology, and cultural research.
Experts call it “Dunhuang before Dunhuang”.
Through the Han portrayal bricks,
we can not only glimpse the depth and profundity of ancient Chinese painting, sculpture, and architectural art
but also are often moved and shocked by the spirits of hard-working and perseverance of people of the Han Dynasty!
Along with the Dunhuang Murals, Han paintings constitute the most wonderful chapters of Chinese civilization.
====
On the first floor of the Han Dynasty portrayal Bricks Museum,
a maker space for culture and museum was created.
Using the rich Han portrayal bricks materials,
taking the advantages of venues resources,
and expert consultants team,
the maker space was open to the public as the Chinese culture creative product development demonstration area.
The space has 260 square meters of academic lecture hall,
which can accommodate 150 people.
Its 400 square meters temporary exhibition area can be used to undertake calligraphy, painting, photography, handicraft display and other forms of exhibition.
The space provided a high quality platform for the academic exchanges and art communications.
Han portrayal bricks production experience area,
and rubbish experience area emphasize interactivity, creativity and heritage,
where you can understand the production process of the portrayal bricks and rubbings
and you can personally participate in the production.
With the comprehensive use of visual, auditory, tactile and other means,

[The collections of the early stages were done for purpose of salvage and protection and for them not to be destroyed.
After that, I paid for my collections. The purpose was to avoid them being scattered and lost.
My bottom line is:
not a single one to sell,
not a single one to give away
and not a single one to exchange.
As to the business of collection,
The truth is that there is a story behind every brick and one can see the culture through every brick. ]
